About the Client

Background

Vigilant Software is an operating room medication system that helps hospitals capture lost revenue and increase patient safety by automating workflows. Its patented processes are used by hospitals and anesthesiologists across the USA.

Overview

The Founder of Vigilant Software, Dr. Peter Baek, approached Invene to help him create V2 of Vigilant Software's main product. While the original system provided tremendous value to their clients, it was hard to scale because it required in-person updates and could not connect with mobile devices. Vigilant Software partnered with Invene to fix this problem.

Challenge

There were significant design constraints in creating this product. The main product, a printer that outputted special syringe labels, required programming in a proprietary and esoteric version of BASIC. The printer could not use WiFi or ethernet as it would significantly delay Vigilant’s sales efforts and triple the cost of installing the product. The Bluetooth transmitter in the device was very cheap, causing problems with communicating with the mobile device. Bluetooth could also be unreliable due to the prevalence of electrical signals in hospitals.

Solution

Invene developed a completely revamped Vigilant Software's original product. It was scalable while also providing a “doctor-proof” experience. Bluetooth was significantly optimized on both the firmware and the mobile app to allow efficient digital communication. The infrastructure was built in a hybrid-cloud approach; it could either be deployed on Azure or locally on a hospital’s air-gapped network. The mobile app was built as a binary framework so it could be released individually or packaged with other mobile applications.

Results

With Invene’s new product, Vigilant Software is now able to scale and sell to hospital systems instead of individual clinics. They can update it wirelessly rather than plugging in a physical USB drive. Vigilant Software is now in talks with multiple hospital systems about rolling out the new system.

"Invene did a great job building V2 of our product. My favorite part of working with them was how fast they delivered new features."
